Terms of use

The terms that apply to using Southern Hiker.

By using Southern Hiker you accept these terms. They were last updated on 19 August 2026.

The information here is guidance, not advice

We work hard to be accurate and we date the things that go stale. Permits, quotas, parking tags and closures are checked against the National Park Service and the relevant national forest, and seasonal road status against the agency that closes the road. Where a trail has changed - the Chimney Tops pinnacle has been shut since the 2016 fires, which most older guides still describe as open - the page says so and says when. Even so, prices, timetables and opening hours change without notice, and the authoritative source is always the operator or the authority concerned. Check anything a trip depends on against its official source before you rely on it. We are not liable for a decision made solely on the basis of a page here.

No professional advice

Nothing on this site is legal, immigration, medical, insurance or financial advice. Trail conditions, river crossings and weather in the Southern Appalachians change fast, and a stage described as straightforward here can be dangerous on the day. Check the current forecast and closures before you walk.

Third-party links and purchases

Some links lead to third parties, and some of those earn us a commission. Any purchase is a contract between you and that seller under their terms. Refunds, delivery, service quality and disputes are theirs to resolve, and we have no ability to intervene in them.

Our content

The text on this site is ours. You are welcome to quote a short passage with a link; systematic copying, republication or use as training data for a commercial model is not permitted. Photographs are used under Creative Commons licences and credited individually: their terms are set by their authors, not by us.

Acceptable use

Do not scrape the site at a rate that degrades it for other readers, attempt to access the admin area, or reproduce the site in a way that suggests we endorse another product.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Seychelles, and any dispute arising from them falls to the courts of Seychelles. If you are a consumer resident elsewhere, this does not remove any protection you have under the mandatory consumer law of your own country.
