I have a quick question for the folks who have been to Lake Conasauga before. While we stayed there (and had an awesome time) i noticed in the men's restroom (for the campsites closest to the lake) that the urinal cakes in the toilet foamed up quite a bit and smelled reminiscent of sulfuric acid or something of the sort. My nose burned and it made me cough a little bit. The reaction reminded me of chemistry class in high school, with a lot of foam rising up. The foam remained for the most part during the next 24 hours while we stayed there. Does anyone have any idea what kind of urinal cakes these are? I've never seen anything like it before in other camp sites...

I would say they are slightly less of a nuisance in the cooler months (Dec., Jan., Feb.; though, that far South, in that humid of an environment, they may not ever really disappear. My last trip to Cumberland was during the month of October, and we still had problems with them. Where I'm from in North Georgia, they are a non-issue that late in the year. The NPS offers similar advice in their FAQ's:

Q: When is the best time to avoid gnats and mosquitoes?
A: The number of gnats and mosquitoes is dependent on the weather. The warmer and wetter the weather, the more the bugs are present.

The biggest piece of advice I can give is do not leave any bare skin exposed without a good quality bug spray.

Your explanations of how to access the falls and the AT are the best I've seen on the web! Finding a good map can also be cumbersome- Thanks for trekking the way for the rest of us fellow hikers!

This is a really great hike that I make a few times a week. The park is in fact a state park run by a private company. The Confederate Hall at the base of the trail has a great museum with lots of information on the area and the mountain. You can stop in before or after your hike. It is worth the side trip. You can also follow the Cherokee Trail around the mountain, appx 8 miles, that intersects with the walk up trail. Most people on the trail do not have hiking etiquette but you have to remember they are doing this for fitness not to enjoy the hike. Its worth it any day of the week and nice to be around people that at least want to be outside.

I'm a big fan of BH. My only gripe is that the road noise can be bothersome. If you were one to tent camp or leave the windows of your camper open at night, you might not be able to sleep.
